What Does Buying A Fixer Upper Really Look Like?

All the shows on TV give us a sneak peek into what fixing up a house looks like, but I think we can all agree that it’s probably not as glamorous as the hosts make it seem!  And many of the projects you see on TV are not like most of the homes found here in Massachusetts.  Check out how we helped one of our clients transform a not-quite-right Fixer-Upper into exactly what she was looking for!

PROJECT AT A GLANCE

Property Location: Billerica, MA

Type of Home: Colonial built in 1920

Project Goal: Update an older solid wood cabinet kitchen, while staying on budget

Design Style: Capture a modern black and white farmhouse look

The Backstory:  Our client was a homeowner living way too far from her grand babies!  We helped her sell her previous home and find a new one that was closer to them.  The one she purchased was *almost* perfect, but there were a few updates she wanted to make before settling in, and the kitchen was at the top of her list.

The kitchen cabinets were solid, but the natural color and busy back splash gave the space a dated look.  In addition, several different cabinets and counter tops had been added over the years contributing to the disjointed feel.

BEFORE:

BEFORE: The original knotty pine kitchen was dark, dated, and unappealing

Since the cabinets were in good shape we decided to paint them white and replace all of the hardware with a matte black finish.  We replaced one cabinet- the big white one- with a narrower cabinet to allow for more walking space.  We also added a shelf above for a microwave.

AFTER: Painting the cabinets and updating the hardware immediately modernizes the space

We also updated the faucet with matte black to match, installed long textured subway tile, added honed counter tops, and replaced the flooring with durable laminate.

BEFORE: The view of the backyard was the only thing we wanted to stay the same!

AFTER: New black appliances finish it off

Our homeowner was not loving the open shelves around the refrigerator so we made doors and painted them to match the rest of the kitchen… And did we mention the floor?  Not pretty!

AFTER: Doors were added around the refrigerator, along with matching back splash and counter, for continuity

Our homeowner loved her Fixer-Upper home, which looks just like new without breaking the bank! She trusted in us to complete her forever home and now she can be closer to her family!
